A Pacific marten appears on a log along Columbine Trail near Questa.

Living in Questa, my wife and I frequently hike on the Columbine Trail.  For reference, we refer to the bridges on the lower part of the trail, beginning at the trailhead, as bridge one, two, three and four. On July 31, we were coming back down the trail. As we approached the third bridge, we noticed three small, dog-like animals cross the trail in front of us.

As we continued toward the third bridge, they scampered along between the trail and the stream. We took a break before crossing the bridge and sat on a log. One of the three animals was curious and it came up for a closer look. We captured several photos, but only one clearly showed the animal. We later determined that it was probably a marten.
