Opinion: Write-in Carrillo for PEC

Among the lesser known election races this year is for half of the 10 seats on the Public Education Commission, which authorizes state chartered schools in New Mexico. The commission has so far authorized 50 state charter schools. Commissioners are elected to serve four-year staggered terms and must be residents from the district they serve. No one officially submitted their names for the District 10 commission seat that encompasses Taos County, but three people are running as write-in candidates.

The District 10 seat for the Public Education Commission is open and I strongly urge you to vote for Steve Carrillo. (All three candidates are write-ins. District 10 includes Santa Fe, Taos, Rio Arriba, and Colfax counties).

By his actions and words, Steve has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to our kids and our schools. Having served the Santa Fe Public Schools with distinction and accomplishment, and not without controversy, Steve has always put kids first, never shied away from a challenge, and always been honest and forthright with his constituents as well as our legislators and the PED. I am certain he will provide the same selfless dedication and leadership serving our state public charter schools.

Why is this seat important? It’s very simple. These are our education tax dollars, these are our schools, and these are our kids. Steve has proven himself as a “can do” elected official who also fully understands and embodies the “servant” part of public servant. Let’s support him in continuing the work.

Write in Steve Carrillo for Public Education Commission, District 10.
