Duane Robert O’Hagan

Duane Robert O’Hagan

Duane Robert O’Hagan, age 76, of Tres Piedras, NM, born November 11, 1938, passed away on January 3, 2015.

Born in Harlowton, Montana, Duane was a graduate of Ontario College of Art whose early career as a landscape painter won him membership in the Ontario Society of Watercolor and the Bermuda Society of Painters. But his passion lay, and he is most remembered by, his wooden and painted Kachinas, Masks, Birds and Spirit Figures. As he said himself, his work is sometimes about American mythology, Mother Earth and Father Sky, and sometimes about birds and finding the sacred in unlikely places and unlikely objects. It is about the Great Mystery. It is about being able to fly at night.

Duane’s creative spirit often carried him on journeys into different cultures, producing collections of Northwest Coast, African and American folk-art inspired carvings.

“But Northern New Mexico is my last stop. Why move on when everything is here?”

Duane’s artwork is widely collected and highly regarded here in Taos, nationally and internationally.

Duane is preceded in death by his father Roy O’Hagan, his mother Janette Lode O’Hagan, his brother Brian O’Hagan, and his sister Karen O’Hagan. He is survived by his brother Dennis O’Hagan and sister Gail O’Hagan Longpre.

Duane had been at the Taos Living Center since the Spring of 2014. Many thanks to all of his doctors, nurses, and staff who cared for him during that time. Friends and family will gather to share in a memorial scattering of his ashes this January. If you have any questions, please call 575-779-5444.
