She was preceded in death by her daughter Rocio Perez; parents Samuel Estrada and Cecilia Rodriguez; mother-in-law Eva Angelina Avitia; and sister-in-law Norma Perez. Guadalupe as a kind, loving, woman, who was always there for her family.

Age 20, a resident of El Prado, passed away unexpectedly March 15, 2023. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Margaret Isabel Arellano and Ubertino Gonzales; paternal grandfather Tereso Mariscal; aunt Beatrice Ortiz; uncle Chencho Aguilar; cousins Juan Mariscal and Gloria Aguilar.

Long time Taos resident Jerry Laughlin passed away on March 16th after living a full, active life.  Born in 1926 in the tiny town of Gotebo, Oklahoma, he graduated from high school in Oklahoma City in 1944 and immediately enlisted in the Navy at 17 years old.  From 1944 to 1946 he served in the Pacific Theater aboard the sub chaser USS PCE 902 as a Motor Machinist Mate 2nd Class Petty Officer.

Mrs. Lillian L. Lujan passed away peacefully on Monday, March 6, 2023 at her home in Taos Pueblo, New Mexico. Mrs. Lujan was a 104 year old proud Dine woman of the Ashiihi (Salt) clan from Coalmine, Arizona, born for Naashtezhi Tabaaha (Zuni Edgewater) in the winter of 1918. She attended Albuquerque Indian School and New Mexico Highlands University - Las Vegas. After graduation, she joined the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) and served as a Sergeant in Detachment 3809 Service Command Unit until her honorable discharge. Once World War II ended, she married Jimmy K. Lujan, Sr. (US Bataan Death March Survivor) and had four children.

Nathaniel Ragland Troy was born on Valentine’s Day in 1939, in Monroe, Louisiana, the youngest of three boys, to Vera Nobes Troy and Richard Matthew Troy. He passed away on February 25, 2023, in Oaxaca City, Mexico, surrounded by his wife and three children. Nat was raised with his two brothers, Richard and Ralph, on Bayou DeSiard, where they and their friends passed the hot, humid months swimming, fishing and water skiing off the dock. Nat’s parents were bold liberals who spoke out against the injustices of Jim Crow South, arousing the ire of the local white citizen’s council and Ku Klux Klan. In 1956, a cross was burned in their yard when Nat was in his third year of high school.

Age 92, a resident of Arroyo Seco, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2023. She was born in Arroyo Seco on April 9, 1930 to Manuel D. Pineda and Lucarita Pacheco. Sophie was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Nancy Trujillo (Larry); brothers Orlando Pineda (Floyda), Jake Pineda (Ernestina) and sisters Natividad and Nicanora Pineda.

Taos lost a legend and long time resident on December 16, 2022. With his two sons by his side, Norman Quenzler passed away peacefully. He raised two wonderful men who are continuing his legacy: Jason Quenzler of Durango, CO (wife Jolie, and daughters Jesse and Jensen) and Clinton Quenzler of Cave Creek, AZ (wife Danijela and daughters Mia and Kora).

Age 76 of Denver, Colorado. Bernice was born in Taos, New Mexico to Thomas & Trinidad Oakeley on March 30, 1946. Bernice is survived by her loving husband, Andy Cardenas, her children Charles, Christopher and DeAnne (Darnell), her brother-in-law S Oliver Romero (Maya) - (Roland (Gloria), Nichole & Thomas (Andrea)), her step-grandchildren Jemelle & Jayden Tullock and step-great grandchild DeAngelo Tullock.  She is also survived by multiple brother/sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews and too numerous to list dear friends of which she held all dear to her heart. Bernice was preceded in death by her father, Thomas S Oakeley, her mother Trinidad R Oakeley, her brother Charlie Oakeley and her sister Maya O Romero.

Age 76, passed away on March 03, 2023 after a short illness. She retired from Taos Municipal Schools as their business manager. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Martinez, parents, Eloisa and Nieves Anaya, Alicia Wisehart (George), Eloy Santistevan, sister, Monica Des Georges, brothers, Lawrence and Jim Santistevan.  She is survived by her children, Raymond Martinez and Roberta Martinez-Flores and son in law, Jeff Flores, grandchildren, Christian Flores, Lauryn Fielder (Josiah) and many other relatives and friends.

Victoriano (Victor) Martinez passed away on March 3 2023 at his home in El Prado NM at the age of 93 he was born in Dixon NM on September 17, 1929. to Fidolino and Luisita Gonzales Martinez Victor is proceeded in Death by his sons, Angelo and Dennis Martinez, parents, Fedilino and Luisa G Martinez, brothers, Bences, Edwardo and Willie, sisters, Onlivama Martinez and Olivia Vaclavik.

Age 57, passed away unexpectedly on February 25th, 2023.  She is preceded in death by her partner Gilbert Gonzales, and her father Charlie Mondragon. She is survived by her daughter Nicole Gonzales (Pat Garcia), grandsons Mateo and Tomas Garcia, granddaughter Jaynie Bowes (Brent), and great-grandchildren Aria and Jayden. Sisters, Lupita Mondragon, Patsy Torres (Jesse), Valorie Mondragon (David Weaver), brothers Gene Mondragon (Joyce), Carlos Mondragon, all her nieces, nephews, many relatives, and friends.

Age 86, of Las Vegas, NV but born and raised in Taos passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 02, 2023. She is preceded in death by her children, Rebecca J. Martinez, Fabian and Luke Lucero, parents, Epimenio and Audilia Lucero, brother, Leroy Lucero, sister, Baida Lucero and grandson in law, Donn Knepp.

Age 58, died March 1st of a cardiac event. He was born in Austin, TX, attended Austin High School and the University of Texas. He worked with the Texas Legislature for approximately 25 years, as a proof reader, legislative aide, and chief of staff before moving to Taos. He was a substitute teacher for eight years in the Taos Municipal Schools, being “Mr. Paul” to kindergarteners to high schoolers. He remained interested in politics and was a voracious reader, book collector and cat lover. His friends described him as witty, excellent conversationalist and debater.

At the moment of sunset on February 22, 2023, Ethan "Skip" Sockwell, 75, surrendered his long, courageous battle with metastatic cancer and died at home with his partner by his side. He was a kind, loving, generous man, a hero, and a gentleman.Ethan was born and raised in East Texas. Drafted into the US Army in 1969, Ethan was trained as an artillery specialist to be deployed in Vietnam, but instead served his time in Wurzburg, Germany. While in Europe, he learned to snow ski and enjoyed visiting different countries. He continued his love of travel by visiting Japan, Scotland, Greece, Belize, and Mexico among other countries during his lifetime.

Age 90, a resident of Rodarte, passed away on February 23, 2023, unexpectedly. He was preceded in death by parents: Vidal and Beroniz Maestas; maternal grandparents: Jose and Sofia Lopez; paternal grandparents: Manuel and Ninfa Maestas; brother Herson Maestas; son in law, Edward Lucero; parent in laws: Trinidad and Elaisita Martinez; grandson, Ramon Michael Maestas; great- granddaughter Peyton O’Malley; and brother-in-law Edward Leyba. George was born and raised in Rodarte and attended Peñasco and St. Michael’s High School in Santa Fe.

On January 20th, 2023, our beloved son THOMAS JONATHAN CLARK TUSKI aka TUSKI passed away and entered into God’s grace. A true warrior throughout life, with a, "Heart of Gold!" Thomas spent a great deal of his life traveling as he loved making friends wherever he went. He most certainly was very friendly and outgoing, always looking for that opportunity to help others wherever his travels would take him.

Age 88 years old, a life-long resident of Cerro, New Mexico, passed away February 11, 2023. She was born November 3, 1934 and is preceded in death by her two husbands, Elivy Jose Segura and Medardo “Bardo” Aguilar, parents, Edward Ortega and Francinia Rael, brothers Floyd (Roxanne) and Fred (Maxine) Ortega and children Frances (Amos) Martinez, Ernesto (Susan) Segura, and Geno (Monica) Aguilar. Her mother died when she was young and was sent to live with her paternal grandmother, Elijia and her husband Manuel Jaramillo, of Arroyo Hondo. She attended primary school in Cerro, where she learned English.

Age 98 died peacefully surrounded by her family on February 20, 2023. Amparo is preceded in death by her two sons, Bobby L. and George A. Cohn, father of her children, Robert A. Cohn, daughters in law, Jane Cohn and Ruby Archuleta, parents, Jose and Guadalupe Gonzales, sisters, Josephine and baby Juanita Gonzales, brothers and sisters in law, Gustavo (Nora), Tony (Cecelia), Juan I. (Nacho) (Mary Alice) and Nick (Helen) Gonzales, great nephews, Miguel, Juanito and Martin.

“El Lechero” was born July 16, 1940 to Beatrice Trujillo and Felix Martinez. He was raised in Ranchitos where he peacefully passed away, surrounded by family, on Sunday morning, February 19th, 2023. He was well known in the Taos community as a musical entertainer and food salesman for many years. He had an uncanny ability to paint a picture with words and had a smile and presence that will never be forgotten.

James Edward Paulsen died at the age of 78 on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 surrounded by his closest friends.  After the loss of his beloved wife Susan, and the complete “defeat over cancer”, Jim finally said “Goodbye”.

Born March 6, 1943 to Eliseo and Celina Gurule and entered the gates of heaven February 13, 2023. Jose was a very hard worker. He worked in many industries including logging, mining and construction. He was proud to be a part of building The Einsenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnels in Colorado as well as the casinos built on the strip in the late 1980s, such as the MGM and Luxor to name a few, in Las Vegas. He was also a carpenter at the San Juan Power Plant.

A resident of Taos, New Mexico passed away in his sleep after a short illness on February 8, 2023 at his home in Santa Fe. He and his wife Gloria were long residents of Taos, both avid skiers and hikers and valued members of the Taos community and St. James Episcopal Church. They built strong communities of lifelong friends wherever they went.

A previous resident of El Prado and longtime resident of Llano Quemado left this earth on February 6, 2023. She was born on April 22, 1944 to Albert (Tito) and Mercedes Silva. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Jose Evaristo Silva, Tomas Silva, and Albert Silva and her sisters Rose (Marceau) Sautlet, and Irene Silva.

A resident of El Prado died of cancer on February 7, 2023. He was 65. Jeff was born on International Worker’s Day (May 1) in 1957. He grew up in Amarillo, Texas and at the time of his death was living in both New Mexico and Texas. Jeff was a lawyer whose long legal career was spent representing the poor and disadvantaged, often for free, in criminal and civil rights cases all over Texas and the Southwest.
