At least one cat died, a kitten was rescued and two dogs were also saved Thursday afternoon (Dec. 10) after a trailer southeast of Taos caught fire and filled with smoke.

Taos volunteer firefighters responded to the report of the structure fire around 2:15 p.m. on Espinoza Road, where a large plume of white smoke emanating from the trailer could be seen for several miles in every direction.

Officers with the Taos County Sheriff's Office helped to control traffic in the neighborhood where the trailer was burning as firefighters broke down doors and windows.

The residents who lived in the trailer were not home when the fire started.

One of the two cats appeared to have died, despite efforts by a firefighter to resuscitate the animal using a small oxygen mask, while two dogs ran out of the trailer, apparently unharmed by the smoke and flames.

An EMT at the scene was able to resuscitate the kitten using an oxygen mask.

The cause of the fire was undetermined as of Thursday evening.
