Taos Men's homeless shelter

Veterans experiencing homelessness in Taos are getting a helping hand thanks to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-VA Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Program and local property owners.

A new program through HUD-VASH would provide veterans with vouchers for rental assistance. It would also connect them, through VA case managers, to services such as healthcare, mental health treatment and substance abuse counseling. The program also extends to the families of these veterans.

"By providing rental assistance vouchers, these Veterans can concentrate on their recovery," said a HUD-VASH representative in a news release.

HUD-VASH is seeking interested property owners, landlords and managers who are willing to help house veterans in search of residence and work.

Interested parties would be required to sign a one-year lease agreement and engage in case management to assist participants with becoming productive members of the community.
