Multiple vehicles were involved in a fatal crash on NM State Road 68 near milepost 17 north of Española on Wednesday (May 12) at around 8:00 a.m.

The New Mexico State Police on the scene said that a 1994 Toyota 4Runner SUV, driven by Siri Atma Kaur Khalsa, 18, from Espanola, was traveling north on NM 68 when the vehicle went off the road for unknown reasons. The Toyota came back on the road and struck a southbound 2015 Subaru SUV, and was then struck by a southbound Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV).

Khalsa sustained fatal injuries in the crash — she was pronounced dead on the scene by the Office of Medical Investigator.

The driver of the Subaru, a 41-year-old male from Arroyo Seco, and the driver of the CMV, a 50-year-old male from Los Lunas, sustained unknown injuries and were transported by emergency medical personnel to an area hospital.

Alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor to the crash. The New Mexico State Police Uniform Bureau, with assistance from the New Mexico State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit, is continuing its investigation of the crash.
