Abeyta Settlement money OKed by Taos in split council vote

The Taos town council voted Tuesday (Sept. 25) to accept $2.8 million from the Bureau of Reclamation to design and plan new municipal wells.

Under the Abeyta Settlement, the town must move some of its wells further away from Taos Pueblo lands.

The vote passed 3 to 2, with councilors Darien Fernandez and Pascualito Maestas voting against accepting the money.

The design phase of the Abeyta wells project should last 18 months and the town should be receiving another $15 million for construction.
