A civil lawsuit accusing the Taos Municipal Schools District of allowing "civil rights violations, negligence and other tortious conduct" in connection with the alleged rape and sexual harassment of a female Taos High School student was filed in U.S. District Court in August.

The complaint, which also names then-Superintendent Lillian Torrez and three educators as defendants, is nearly identical to a separate civil complaint filed against the same defendants on behalf of another female Taos High School student in U.S. District Court in October 2020. Both lawsuits stem from separate claims made by both students that they were sexually assaulted multiple times in their freshman years by Tranquelino Romero on the campus of Taos High School.
