Peñasco school board terminates superintendent's contract

'I am proud of the work that we have done together this year,' Peñasco Independent Schools Superintendent Lisa Hamilton said in March while addressing the board and community members during public comment. The Peñasco School Board voted 3-2 Tuesday (Dec. 15) not to renew her contract at the end of the academic year.

During the regularly scheduled Peñasco School Board meeting Tuesday evening (Dec. 15), board members narrowly voted 3-2 to not renew the contract for superintendent Lisa Hamilton. Peñasco School Board President, Amanda Bissell, confirmed the results.

“We did vote to not renew her contract for the 21-22 school year,” Bissell said, confirming Hamilton will remain as superintendent through the end of the fourth quarter ending in May 2021.

Hamilton has been absorbed in controversy since she took her post in 2019. The Peñasco school board held a private meeting and voted to not renew her contract back in March of this year. Due to the meeting violating New Mexico's Open Meetings Act; the board then voted 3-2 to renew Hamilton's contract, and she was reinstated. This time, it appears to be official.

“Despite my significant contributions to the district the board did not renew my contract for next year,” Hamilton said in a text message. “It was a 3-2 vote. There are a lot of community members that are unhappy.”

This is a developing story.
