In our current information economy, math is everywhere. But its impact and influence are almost invisible and not fully understood.
“Counted Out,” a documentary film by Vicki Abeles, shows us the power of math that undergirds our democracy. Who holds that power? Who doesn’t? How can we all speak the language of math to fully participate in a world that belongs to everyone?
A screening of the film Saturday (Aug. 9) at 1:30 p.m. at Taos Center for the Arts, 133 Paseo del Pueblo Norte, is part of a collaboration between UNM-Taos HIVE, the Taos Center for the Arts, and the LANL Foundation, according to a press release.
“Counted Out” has been an official selection at dozens of film festivals, including the San Francisco International Film Festival and South by Southwest EDU. It’s screening at Original Thinkers in Telluride, Colorado, spotlighted the intersection of mathematical thinking and civic health. An election-themed showing at a KALW public radio event on National Voter Registration Day in the San Francisco Bay Area was another highlight.
According to a press release: “Across the country, we are growing the conversation about the math crisis in America whose solution is at our fingertips, the quality of our lives, the future of our society, and the health of our democracy.”
Saturday’s family friendly event at the TCA is free and will include games, activities, raffle prizes and refreshments.
