Mattress Mary's will celebrate a second Taos furniture store with a ribbon-cutting Friday (May 3) at noon and a Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday (May 4) beginning at 10 a.m., with special deals, door prizes and promotions.
Mary Domito owns and operates four stores, with one in Alamosa, one in Santa Fe and two in Taos. She says she opened Mattress Mary's Mountain Lifestyle, 815 Paseo del Pueblo Sur, so she could be in control of her own destiny.
"The risk of spending the time and the money to do this venture now was preferable to me, rather than sitting back and watching someone else do it and then I would just have another competitor," she said.
Mattress Mary's original showroom and furniture store, at 710 Paseo del Pueblo Sur near Albertsons Market, has been in business for 15 years in various iterations. This second store offers Domito something she has always wanted--highway visibility.
Taos Lifestyle, the original store, will stay the same, a source for transitional to contemporary furnishings and mattresses. The second store, located between Walgreens and El Taoseño Restaurant, will focus on mountain or lodge living as well as more affordable items.
"We have some square footage [where] we can offer affordable furnishings to help people out," Domito said. "We don't have the room over at the original store."
The store will also offer entry-level mattresses from Corsicana. Between the two stores they offer mattresses from all major mattress companies - Simmons, Serta, Strearns and Foster, and Sealy.
Mattress Mary's employs a total of 10 people, full-time, counting both stores.
Domito's West Coast business acumen has paid off. She moved to Taos in 2004 after 40-plus years in the Bay area of California, where she was one of the first female district managers for a large mattress seller. But Domito says she felt unfulfilled and that her life was not her own so she sold her Vacaville home and bought a condo in Taos. She opened her small mattress store, which has morphed into its current evolution of Taos Lifestyle and Sleep Sanctuary. The second store, Mattress Mary's Mountain Lifestyle, opened its doors in February.
"I'm the lucky one to live here and wake up in such a beautiful place like Taos," she says.
The key to success, Domito says, is to know your products.
"Know your business, do your homework, know your demographics and timing is everything," she would tell future entrepreneurs. "Don't be afraid to go get money, get good people, value them and let them do what they do best."
Domito's passion to buy local is genuine.
"You know, I do get upset when I see a Mattress Firm delivery truck from Santa Fe go through town, and although I understand it, I want to know, did we even get a shot?" she asks. "Did they even come in and check us out?"
The new showroom space, housed in the former Greystone Furniture store, took a few months longer than expected to open due to legalities and needed renovations.
"You have to really understand the geography of the place because at the end of the day, it all comes down to the simplicity of supply and demand," according to Domito.
Factory representatives will be at the grand opening Saturday. There will be a grand prize drawing and door prize drawings throughout the day.
