As summer blooms in the mountains, Angel Fire Resort is toiling away on a substantial development project for winter: construction of two new lifts, one slated to begin running in time for the 2025-26 ski season.
The Rakes Rider, a fixed-grip, quad chairlift, will open on the backside of the mountain in winter 2025. Not for the faint of heart, the lift will shuttle rippers from the base of the Southwest Flyer lift to the top of the Steeps, a swath of black diamonds and some of the resort's most beloved terrain.
On the front side, the Angel Express will be a high-speed, six-pack, detachable chairlift — the only six-pack lift in the state — slated to be operational by December 2026. It will carry winter sports enthusiasts from the parking lot to roughly the halfway point of the front side, helping developing skiers and snowboarders cruise some shorter runs.Â
Set to open in consecutive ski seasons, the two new lifts will double Angel Fire's lift capacity.
Construction crews are busy building bases and pouring cement. The resort has contracted out  an aircraft from Timberline Helicopters called "The Lorax" that has delivered cement to the top of the mountain July 2 and 12, with one more day scheduled for Aug. 8.
For summer recreators, the resort also announced construction of a pickleball complex near Olympic Park. The recreation facility will feature eight courts, expected to debut by late fall. A new tennis and pickleball pro shop will follow suit. A brand-new splash pad and disc golf course are also underway.
"These new chair lifts, pickleball courts, and more are investments in our mountain infrastructure and resort amenities, which underscores our dedication to enhancing the resort experience for our members and visitors," the resort said in a press release.Â
