Jeffrey Vargas, a 2008 graduate of Taos High School, graduated from the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy on Oct. 27. It also was his birthday. Vargas went through 16 weeks of intense training in order to graduate.

Prior to being hired by the Taos County Sheriff's Office, Vargas was a corrections officer for two-and-a-half years at the New Mexico State Penitentary super maximum facility.

Ceremonies were held in Santa Fe for the academy graduation. In attendance were family and fellow Taos County sergeants and deputies. County Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe, along with Deputy Elias Montoya, presented Vargas with his certificate. A small reception was held Oct. 28 in honor of his accomplishment.

Vargas is the son of Lawrence and Patsy Vargas.
