Playing in their third straight Class 4A game of the 2017 season – and against the second team from the southern half of the state – the Taos Tigers emerged victorious again with a 48-7 victory over the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) Colts Sept. 8.
Coming off a road win against the Hope Christian Huskies Saturday (Sept. 2), the Tigers only had four days to prepare for the Colts. But neither the short week nor the nearly six-hour road trip from Taos to Roswell seemed to affect the Tigers in the least. Coach Art Abreu Jr. and his gridiron squad handily scored on offense and stuffed the Colts on defense.
The Tigers now sit at 3-0 overall – the best three-game start for third-year coach Abreu Jr. Including this current season, the Tigers have started the season with three consecutive wins four times since 2012. The Tigers have yet to go 4-0, but will get that chance when they take on the Santa Fe High School Demons at Anaya Stadium for homecoming Sept. 15. The Class 6A Demons come to Taos riding a 27-game losing streak, with their last win occurring Oct. 3, 2014. Game time is 7 p.m.
