Questa Independent School District has begun the search for a new superintendent following the resignation of Valerie Trujillo, who held the position for more than three years.
Trujillo, the former Questa High School principal, took over the superintendent position following Dr. Lillian Torrez’s move to Taos Municipal Schools and held the position until a Thursday (July 6) Questa School Board meeting. The board met in executive session to discuss her resignation. The board asked Michelle Gonzales to fill in as interim superintendent that evening.
“My position is short-termed and they will be looking at hiring a long-term superintendent soon,” said Gonzales.
Gonzales has a year of experience in administration under her belt as the principal of Alta Vista Elementary and Intermediate School and Río Costilla Southwest Learning Academy. According to Gonzales, she will be filling in for more than a week while the board decides on hiring a new permanent superintendent. Gonzales said she is not interested in the full-time position at this point.
Trujillo’s resignation comes shortly after the departure of board member Rosaline Ortega, who has recently been replaced by Ellis Garcia Jr. on the school board. The board was scheduled to vote Wednesday (July 12) in a special meeting on the process for hiring a new superintendent.
Trujillo could not be reached for comment.
