For the second straight outing, the Questa Lady Cats defeated the Escalante (Tierra Amarilla) Lady Lobos on the hardcourt. This time, the victory came during the District 5-2A semi-final match held at the “Mini-Pit” in Questa Feb. 23. The 47-39 final gave the Lady Cats the edge in the three game series between the two Northern New Mexico teams, and afforded Questa the chance to play for the district championship Feb. 24.
Tied at 4-4 in district play with the Lady Lobos and the Mora Rangerettes at the end of the regular season, the Lady Cats held the advantage due to a favorable point differential over the other two teams. This gave Questa the second seed in the district tournament in the league's “ladder” bracket, and a home game for the semi-final tilt.
The win may have solidified Questa's chances to receive an invitation to the state tournament slated to begin next week. As of midnight, Feb. 24, the Lady Cats occupied the 15th spot in the New Mexico Activities Association poll. The victory helps Questa's overall record which now stands at 13-14 (.481 win percentage). Only the top 16 teams in each class receive invites to the post-season tourney, and in the same poll, Escalante (12-13) was in the number 16 spot.
The Lady Cats travel to Peñasco for the championship game, and will be the second time in seven days the two teams face off. In their last meeting, the Lady Panthers beat Questa, 77-45 at Jicarita Peñasco Gymnasium Feb. 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
