Fifteen teams, 10 of which competed for the team title, ran at East Mountain’s cross-country meet Saturday (Sept. 29). Peñasco and a familiar foe, district-rival Santa Fe Prep, however, ran past the competition in the boys varsity race.
Peñasco finished second with 64 points behind SFPHS’ 43. East Mountain (73) finished third, followed by Estancia (116) and Bosque (151) in fifth.
“It went pretty good,” PHS head coach Ben Sánchez said. Sánchez said the course had a long hill that the racers had to run up twice, and the second time was right before the finish.
Isaiah Rodarte led PHS with a third-place finish in 19 minutes and 9 seconds. Kyle Fernández was the next Panther, finishing 10th, followed by Max López (15th), Pat Denne (17th), and Reyes Leyba (22nd) who also scored for the Panthers.
Prep, meanwhile, had three runners finish in the top 10 and it’s No. 5 runner finished four spots ahead of Peñasco’s fifth.
In the girls varsity race, Peñasco finished fifth with 91 points, but the Lady Panthers finished one place ahead of Santa Fe Prep (131). East Mountain (46) took first, followed by Estancia (57) and Bosque (66).
Charlyna Gonzales finished seventh to lead PHS. Gonzales was second after the first loop, but her leg started hurting her, Sánchez said, and a few runners were able to pass her.
Victoria Vásquez (21st), Makaela Vogel (23rd), Nancy Tafoya (29th) and Katherine Gallegos (35th) rounded out the Lady Panthers score.
