Good news week here at the Sports Desk.
Taos High School won a state team championship this weekend (May 17-18). The Lady Tigers track team claimed the AAA title while the Tigers finished third. How sweet is that? Those kids and coaches deserve a lot of props. They started the season strong and kept getting faster and faster, peaking at the state championships and bringing home a ton of individual medals to go along with the team trophies.
Good job, Taos High.
The Taos Blizzard baseball team played the first game of their inaugural season Wednesday (May 15). Nobody really knew what to expect from the team, or the league for that matter, so I think the Blizzard exceeded a lot of expectations. They're legit. The action is fast and the team loves hitting at this altitude. (I think there's still a home run ball on the Taos News' roof). They won that first game, 16-6, against the Santa Fe Fuego and the teams went on to split the opening series, 2-2.
The Blizzard's next home games will be May 27 and 29 at noon against the Las Vegas Train Robbers, who is also an expansion team this year. The Santa Fe Brewery will be there too...
The Angel Fire Bike Park opened for the season Friday (May 17). That place is straight-up sick. Super flowy, super smooth trails, and tons of them. The cool thing about mountain bike trails is you can sculpt them any way you want — and Angel Fire packed in tons of fun features while digging its trails. It's nice to sit on a chairlift again too and lap a mountain without having to pedal up first...
