Carson National Forest supervisor (James) Duran has proposed the Pontil Creek timber sale on the Carson National Forest. The proposed logging is quite close to the Shuree fishing area, McCrystal campground and Cimarron campground. This is a large timber sale. Nearly 10 square miles will be logged. The Carson NF forest plan contains protection standards that prohibit logging in Mexican spotted owl and northern goshawk habitat.
Now supervisor Duran is claiming these two rare birds need to have their habitat logged to thrive. Therefore, he proposes to amend his forest plan to weaken Mexican spotted owl and northern goshawk habitat standards to allow logging. The comment period ends on March 14.
