A Taos District Court jury trial for an Española man accused of kidnapping a 15-year-old Peñasco girl in February has been postponed pending the defendant's acceptance of a plea agreement proposed by the state.
The trial had been scheduled to take place Monday morning (Nov. 27), but was moved after Taos District Court Judge Sarah Backus approved a motion granting defendant Cristian Orozco additional time to consider the deal.
The details of the plea agreement were not immediately available.
Orozco was arrested for allegedly abducting 15-year-old Angelica Valdez at gunpoint from her grandparents Peñasco home. Orozco allegedly forced entry into the residence on Feb. 25, brandished a handgun, assaulted the family and kidnapped Valdez. Orozco then allegedly fled south with the teenage girl to the Española area, where he was arrested the following morning on Feb. 26.
Valdez was returned to safety, and Orozco was subsequently arraigned on kidnapping, burglary, battery and assault charges.
