Heinrich gives Weinstein contributions to Taos charity

In the face of growing allegations of sexual misconduct against Hollywood producer and Democratic Party benefactor Harvey Weinstein, U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich has donated his campaign contributions from Weinstein to a charity in Taos.

“As soon as Sen. Heinrich learned of these allegations, he donated the $5,400 contribution to Community Against Violence, a nonprofit organization here in New Mexico,” Heinrich’s campaign spokeswoman, Marsha Garcia, told The New Mexican on Tuesday (Oct. 11).

Community Against Violence is a nonprofit that offers free and confidential services to “survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.”

“Sen. Heinrich has been a longtime supporter of Community Against Violence,” said Malinda Williams, director of CAV. “We are grateful he thought of CAV when he decided to donate the funds he had received as a campaign contribution from Harvey Weinstein.”

Williams added, “CAV exists to end sexual and domestic violence. It is a continuum ranging from inappropriate sexualized comments and sexual harassment all the way through to assault and rape. We applaud the courageous people who speak out about it and hold the offenders accountable.”

Weinstein made two contributions, each for $2,700, to Heinrich, a Democrat from Albuquerque, on April 26.

Searches of state and federal databases Tuesday showed no other contributions by Weinstein to any other New Mexico politician.

The New York Times reported last week that several women, including actress Ashley Judd, had accused Weinstein of sexual harassment.

Accusations against Weinstein multiplied this week. The New Yorker reported that three women have accused Weinstein of rape and more than a dozen other women claimed he’d groped or sexually harassed them.

The New York Times published another article in which actresses, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie, accused Weinstein of making unwanted sexual advances.

Weinstein has denied the charges in the most recent articles.
