A Tres Piedras man was killed when two vehicles crashed head-on around 6 p.m. Thursday evening (Nov. 16) along U.S. 285 in Tres Piedras, shutting down traffic in the area for hours.
According to an update provided by New Mexico State Police at 11:30 a.m. Friday morning (Nov. 17), 59-year-old Tres Piedras resident Mark Conklin was killed when his vehicle crossed the center line "for unknown reasons" and collided with a Freightliner semi-truck driven by Agusto Zamudro, 48, of Portales.
State Police officers and members of Tres Piedras Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene near mile post 384 before 7 p.m. Medics pronounced Conklin dead at the scene. Zamudro was uninjured and released on site, said Taos Emergency Services Chief Joaquin Gonzalez.
Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts, the press release states.
The roadway was still closed to traffic as of 9 p.m. on Thursday, but has since been reopened.
