Business and life as usual or not in a constantly changing world?

Posted

Is there such a thing as usual or normal anymore? As we experience the seasons, the business world or life in general, can we recognize anything that is "the way things used to be"? My answer is a resounding "no." For many folks, this is very unsettling. What about you? How do you feel about all of this? Most of all, what can we do about all this change? And what are we willing to do in this time of transition and transformation? Here are some thoughts for your consideration:

Take management seriously: At work and at home, you and I have the right and the responsibility to carefully and intentionally manage our thoughts, words and actions. With so much change - and much of it seems (and is) challenging - we will be better off if we can be proactive versus reactive. Taking care and being intentional as we think, speak, make decisions and interact are more important than ever. Our words and our actions have an impact on others and may well have long-term consequences. This is not meant to be alarming. It is meant to say, "Pay attention."

As I talk with family, friends and clients, most everyone I know is dealing with important, if not critical, issues regarding health, finances, job or life changing decisions. My wife and I can identify with an item or two in each of those areas. If we manage our work and life with a focus on change and challenges as an opportunity, we will create a better life and world for everyone.

Slow down, stop, look and listen: In a holiday season, we can easily speed up, keep going, miss the obvious and forget to notice the sounds of joy and silence.

Here are some pacing suggestions:

Slow down your speed of pace during the next two weeks with whatever you are doing. Slow down on the road, wherever you are going.

• Set a timer on your smartphone and every three hours between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., stop for a minute (a full 60 seconds). Look at what and who is around you. Think of the specialness of the opportunities of the life you have. Listen to the sounds around you, the ones that are there, that you often don't hear.

Stop, look and listen to the many holiday sounds of meaning and purpose.

Share your discoveries with a friend, co-worker or customer.

Draw or write a special message of this season: Give that drawing or message to one or more people at your place of work, at home or on the street. If you are a business owner, consider handing out small cards or wooden hearts as a gift to spread joy, peace and love to the world. You don't have to be a business owner to do this.

In these challenging times, when we find something ordinary, usual or normal, recognize it as extraordinary. In the midst of change, transition and transformation, notice and celebrate the mystery, the magic and the miracles. 'Tis the season!
