Bruce "Jack" Bissell
Sipapu Ski Area lost a loyal ski-bum on November 12, 2017, when Bruce "Jack" Bissell died due
to complications from lymphoma. Bruce was born to Dare and Ray Bissell, and he lived in and
around Peñasco, NM for most of his life where he and Sue Lawrence raised three daughters:
Elena Bissell Marshall (Nick Marshall), Amanda Bissell (John Paul Bradley), and Mary Bissell.
At 60 he underwent a successful double-lung transplant in November 2013, giving Bruce nearly
four years post-transplant to enjoy his favorite activities with his favorite people.
Bruce spent many years as a ski instructor and acted as the Ski School Director at Sipapu,
which he loved. Bruce would like to be remembered as a horrible dancer, a fair golfer, a decent
carpenter, a pretty good shortstop, a good skier, and a very good driver. Most of all, he hopes
he was a good son, friend and father. And he was. He spent his last years as a loving
grandfather to Nora Dare Bradley-Bissell and Samuel James Marshall.
Bruce is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his three daughters, two son-in-
laws, his grandchildren, and his brother and sister-in- law Charles and Elise Bissell, as well as
their sons Braden, Kevin, and Andrew, many loving friends, and his cherry trees.
Bruce will be cremated and have his ashes spread in the mountains he loved so dearly. A
memorial will take place on December 9 th in Llano, New Mexico. All are welcome to reach out to the family for more details. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alpha-1 Foundation.
