The Taos Wal-Mart says it will not allow the sale of fireworks in its parking lot this year.
The decision came a day after Taos Mayor Darren Córdova and Taos County Commission Chairman Dan Barrone wrote a letter to TNT Fireworks asking the company to delay fireworks sales until the threat of wildfire has passed.
Wal-Mart manager Dan Steele told The Taos News that he contacted TNT Fireworks after meeting with the elected officials Tuesday (June 25). Steele said he told TNT that the store would not permit the fireworks sellers to use the parking lot this year.
Steele made clear that Wal-Mart itself was not selling fireworks inside the store.
A representative of TNT Fireworks in Albuquerque said he was not aware of the letter or the officials’ request to delay sales. According to the TNT website, the Taos fireworks tent was scheduled to open Thursday (June 27).
