The Taos County Commission voted 3-0 Tuesday (May 28) to terminate its contract with county attorney Barbara Martínez.

Before the vote, commissioner Tom Blankenhorn said the decision to terminate Martínez' contract was not a "reflection on the county attorney's abilities as an attorney." Rather, he said the move was prompted by a "conflict within the administration."

Blankenhorn specifically said that Martínez is entitled to severance pay as dictated by her contract. The Taos News requested a copy of that contract but has not yet seen the document.

Commissioners Blankenhorn, Dan Barrone and Gabriel Romero all voted to terminate the contract effective immediately. Commissioners Joe Mike Durán and Larry Sánchez were not present.

Martínez was hired as county attorney in October 2010. Last year, she took over as interim county manager for several months after the previous county commission fired Jacob Caldwell.

County manager Stephen Archuleta said that the commission now planned to offer the county attorney position to current assistant county attorney Robert Malone.
