Two locally made New Mexico Governor’s Cup Award-winning films to be screened
By Tempo staff
“Never before has there been a screening of two New Mexico Governor’s Cup award-winning films that would benefit two local libraries, the one at Taos Pueblo Day School and the other at the University of New Mexico-Taos. At least not to our knowledge,” said Kathleen Knoth, UNM-Taos Library Director in a press release.
Tempo editor Rick Romancito will present his 16-minute film titled “Benito’s Gift,” which was shot in Taos in 2006 featuring an all local cast. According to his Web site, “The movie, shot on digital video by Emmy and Peabody Award-winning director of photography Doug Crawford, is one of the first times a movie has been produced, written and directed; starring; and inspired by people from Taos Pueblo.”
Adam Rael, a Taos Day School student who plays the lead role, will be on hand to sing a song or two and answer questions about his acting experience, the press release continues.
Also on the bill is Frederick Aragón’s “Coyote Tales: Mystery’s Night” which just debuted at the Santa Fe Film Festival’s Southwest Showcase. Aragón’s 10-minute film is based on one of his original songs that throws the trickster coyote in the midst of a love story.
"These are two New Mexico Governor’s Cup award-winning films that Romancito and Aragón are graciously gifting to our community, but that’s not all the entertainment on the program," Knoth said. Romancito plans to also "share a few other short films The Taos News has produced at various occasions relating to Taos Pueblo. These short programs, which have been available to see in the newspaper’s Web site at www.taosnews.com, are being shown for the first time on a large screen."
And if that’s not enough entertainment for one night, there will be a display of some very special art. Taos Day School Librarian Laura Parks-Sierra is providing the photographic works of several third graders. The Photography Club will have their pieces on hand for purchase so there will be even more opportunity for gift giving and receiving.
Mildred Young, UNM-Taos Native American Advisor and Taos Day School Education Technician, worked hard to bring you the entertainment for the evening which includes UNM-Taos students and Taos Day School students in collaborative performances.
Lastly, there will be refreshments for sale which will help raise some funds for the Taos Day School’s eighth grade end-of-the-year trip. This year they plan to take an Amtrak train to California.
Knoth, Parks-Sierra and Ana Pacheco, UNM-Taos assistant librarian, said they collaborated on this event because they feel that "any time someone walks into their libraries they always leave with a gift whether it’s a fun book to read, a factual book to help with homework, some much needed information, or access to a computer to check out a Web site."
“It is a win-win situation because you get the gift of this very special evening and the cost of your admission goes right back to your library,” explained Parks-Sierra.
The UNM-Taos Library is open to all Taos County residents and the Taos Day School Library is open to all Taos Pueblo residents. “Buying a ticket to this event is simply giving a gift to yourself,” Knoth said. “You’re investing in your library.”
Romancito is also planning to have DVD copies of “Benito’s Gift” available for sale.
The Bareiss Gallery is located at 15 NM 150 (Taos Ski Valley Road). Tickets at the door are $8 for adults, $5 for ages 6-15, and children 5-years-old and under are free. For more information, call (575) 737-6243 or (575) 758-3652.
