Rendón gets St. Francis Award

By Larry Torres
Monday, October 13, 2008 2:09 PM MDT
“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, let me sow pardon and where there is doubt, let me sow faith.” Thus begins the Peace Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi who was born Giovanni Francesco Bernardone circa 1181.

Every Oct. 4, which is his feast day, the Archbishop of Santa Fe calls upon all his priests to submit the names of people in their various parishes who best exemplify the teachings of St. Francis. This year’s recipient from Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Arroyo Hondo is Isabel Rendón (née Trujillo).

“It was one of the happiest days of my life,” exclaimed Rendón when she was asked about the ceremony. “My son Charlie Roy and grandson Carlitos III were with me y yo lloré (wept with joy). I was nominated for this honor by Fr. James Marshall before he left to his next parish assignment, but it was Fr. Titus Augustine who stood next to me when I received it.”

All of these nominees are brought together for a special Mass celebrated at the Cathedral Basilica of Santa Fe and they are presented with the St. Francis Award. It is a bronze medal, which is minted yearly, bearing the likeness of the saint and the coat of arms of the archdiocese.
