But the kids and coworkers who knew him well remember Sharfin as everything from the Wizard of Oz to a passionate educator and good friend. This month, Enos García Elementary School will honor Sharfin with its 15th Annual Fifth-Grade Walk-a-Thon Oct. 17 at Anaya Field.
Sharfin, who helped start the walka- thon that funds school field trips and other activities, died of cancer in June at age 65. Fifth-grade teacher Priscilla Romo said it was Sharfin who first came up with the idea of a walk-a-thon for fundraising.
“He came into my room and said, ‘Priscilla, let’s raise money in a healthy way.’ He knew that physical fitness is what kids need,” Romo said. “That’s why we want to do it in memory of Roy.”
Some of Sharfin’s former colleagues at Enos García spoke highly of the San Cristóbal resident last Monday (Sept. 29). “He had the most incredibly contagious laugh,” teacher Sally Blair said of Sharfin.
“He always did a play with his kids every year. My fondest memory of him was when he played the Wizard of Oz in his class play. It was the perfect role for him.”
Teacher Caren Taylor remembered how Sharfin began the ski club for local students who couldn’t afford a ski pass.
“So many kids learned to ski through that club. Roy had a way of making you feel when you were talking to him that you were special and valued,” Taylor said. “As much as he was a good teacher, he was also a good friend.”
A Taos resident for more than 30 years, Sharfin became a teacher when back problems got in the way of his dentistry. Romo said she will always remember Sharfin’s friendly personality.
“He was always telling a joke,” Romo said. “If you were across the Smith’s parking lot and he saw you, he’d yell and scream your name to say hello.”
Teacher Rubina Quinto knew Sharfin first as her children’s dentist and then as a colleague. She says that some days, the hardest thing about remembering Sharfin is feeling his absence.
“Even today, when I still see books around here with his signature in them, I get a lump in my throat,” Quinto said.
