Livingston replaces editor Gerald Garner Jr.
“With over 250 applicants it was a very tough decision,” said The Taos News publisher Chris Baker, adding that applicants came from as far as Japan, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Canada and all over the U.S. “Robin Martin and I are excited about hiring from within.”
Martin is owner of The Taos News, Santa Fe New Mexican and Sangre de Cristo Chronicle.
“Joan Livingston has a big range of experience with her previous paper, plus she ‘gets’ it, she understand how Taos works,” Baker continued. “She has a keen sense of the community, she understands the different cultures and what it takes to put out a great weekly newspaper.”
Livingston moved two years ago from western Massachusetts, where she worked 21 years at the Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton, one of the oldest dailies in the U.S. There she was a reporter, columnist, special sections editor and line and copy editor.
Her rise at the Taos paper has been somewhat meteoric: September 2006 she began freelancing for The Taos News; in June 2007 she became copy editor and by July 2008 was named assistant editor, just weeks before Garner announced his departure.
Livingston won the new position after a three-week application period, during which she has also been the interim editor, allowing her to get a good handle on both fiber and cyber operations of The Taos News.
“I’m a great fan of community reporting, not only because it has heart, but because it can have a profound impact on our readers’ lives,” Livingston said.
Having worked with Garner closely over the past year, she said he will be missed.
“He’ll be a tough act to follow, but I’m up to the challenge,” she said. “Plus, we have a great staff in the newsroom. The Taos News is an award-winning paper and Gerald has a lot to do with that.”
